Canterbury 3 Guildford 1

DAVID MATHEWS shook off an ankle injury to set Canterbury on the way to a vital 3-1 win at home to bottom side Guildford in the Slazenger England Hockey League on Sunday.

Mathews fired home a drag flick from a penalty corner in the eighth minute, and Greg Nicol added a reverse stick finish before setting up the third for Matt Harper two minutes later, to make it 3-0 after 21 minutes.

Danny Hall pulled one back in the second half, but Canterbury marked coach Dave Bunyan’s last league game in charge, before concentrating on his England duties, with a victory that lifts them out of the bottom two of the Premier Division at the mid-season break.
