A 79th-minute strike by Scott Wagstaff, just three minutes after he had come on as a substitute, earned Charlton a precious three points at The Valley on Tuesday night.

The young winger fired home a low drive as the Addicks extended their unbeaten home record to 18 matches.

Charlton led 1-0 at the break thanks to a 31st-minute header by David Mooney but Hartlepool drew level five minutes into the second half through a Denis Behan penalty after Miguel Llera had fouled Anthony Sweeney.

Manager Phil Parkinson then shuffled his pack, bringing on Wagstaff and Leon McKenzie, and it was Wagstaff who decided the outcome with a 25-yard sizzler into the bottom corner.

The victory lifted the Addicks into joint second place in the table with Norwich City, with both clubs on 54 points.
