Dartford veterans pay respect to the Queen in 70-minute vigil

A group of veterans marked the death of the Queen by taking part in a 70-minute non-stop salute – one minute for every year of her reign.

The 10am vigil today took place at Dartford War Memorial.

Former Light Infantryman Darren Riley was joined by other veterans, and leaders from the Armed Forces Cadet Association were also present.

Leader of Dartford Borough Council, Cllr Jeremy Kite attended too, and said some words of reflection.

The National Anthem was played by pipe major and ex-Black Watch Chic Makie, and prayers were said by Padre Eric Hookins from the Dartford Sea Cadets, while members of the public watched on.

Darren said: "I will always fulfil my oath of allegiance given in September 1990 to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her heirs and successors.

"It was indeed an honour and privilege to serve under Her Majesty The Queen. Upholding the constitution and representing the Crown has been the highlight of my life.

"I feel, like many veterans, very sad at this time and hope the monarchy endures and wish our new King, King Charles III the same oath I gave his mum, Her Majesty The Queen, Queen Of England and the Commonwealth. God save the King."
