A South African teenager smashed a club-record 220 for Nonington.

Jason Van Dyk, nicknamed Virgil by team-mates in honour of the Liverpool centre-back, weighed in with the total in a Kent League Division 2 clash with Whitstable.

Van Dyk’s innings included 16 sixes and 19 fours.

The 19-year-old, from Johannesburg, came to Kent for the summer as Nonington’s overseas player.

He opened in the game at Whitstable alongside wicketkeeper Riccardo Di Cicco before also batting with Dan Dawkins and captain Paul Betts.

Van Dyk flew past Whitstable’s total of 296, with Nonington posting 300-2 from 46.3 overs, taking the 18 points.

There may be more to come from Van Dyk, who has previously racked up a personal best of 257 runs.

One of four cricketing brothers, Van Dyk, who plays for South African Premier League club Bedfordview, said: “I knew it was the biggest game of the season and I was hoping for a big score - but this exceeded my expectations.”

Nonington president David Luckhurst said: “Jason has been an incredible addition to the club.”

The previous club record at Nonington of 169, set by Dan Birch in a league game against Downham and Bellingham, had stood since 2018.

A spin bowler, Van Dyk, also took a wicket in the game on June 18.
