17 injured in crashes in fog

NEARLY 50 cars, vans and lorries were involved in a series of crashes on the A20 on Thursday night.

Seventeen people were injured and 11 were admitted to hospital although no one was seriously hurt. A spokesman for the Kent Fire and Rescue Service said it was amazing that nobody was killed.

Police are examining whether thick fog was a factor in what witnesses described as chaos on the road between Dover and Folkestone.

The crashes all happened within minutes of each other. It is thought that the worst injury was a suspected broken leg.

The crashes happened between the Roundhill Tunnel and the Aycliffe Roundabout.

Two firefighters who had been contaminated with a mild irritant, barium salt, also received hospital treatment.
