FIRST GOAL: Paul McCarthy

Gravesend & Northfleet 2 Halifax Town 0

GRAVESEND moved to within two points of the Conference play-off zone with a 2-0 win over Halifax at Stonebridge Road on Tuesday night.

Goals in each half from Ross Smith and Onome Sodje helped Fleet take all three points and left struggling Halifax in the relegation zone.

Fleet went ahead when Smith headed a Paul McCarthy cross past visiting keeper Craig Mawson in the 17th minute.

The hosts came close to doubling their lead when McCarthy headed against the posts, while leading scorer Charlie MacDonald and Mark Debolla both had efforts saved by Mawson.

But Fleet effectively sealed the win when Sodje headed home Robert Quinn’s cross 10 minutes from time.

The result was a bonus for Gravesend after the original match against Halifax was abandoned in torrential rain in December with the away side leading 2-1.
