Exactly 68 years ago Kent was in the grip of the battle that was the turning point of the Second World War.

On the ground, thousands of bombs and shells rained down death and destruction, earning Kent the nickname Hell Fire Corner.

But in the long hot summer of 1940 the sky above provided a deep blue canvas for the survival struggle that became known as the Battle of Britain.

Day after day the RAF scrambled its young and largely inexperienced fighter pilots to stop the mighty Luftwaffe as wave after wave of bombers set about blasting Britain into submission.

Now The Few who fought and won that critical battle are even fewer and a new fight is on to ensure the nation never forgets their heroism.
