Review of the year: May to August

It was the year Ukip were to shake up British politics - with charismatic leader Nigel Farage fighting his own personal battle in Thanet.

After a resounding victory in Rochester and Strood's by-election months earlier, the stage was set for a huge political upset.

But as May 8 dawned, and the party realised it had secured just one seat in the general election, Mr Farage dramatically resigned in the county.

The historical moment was not the first time Kent made national headlines.

It was a summer of discontent for thousands of drivers using the M20.

Operation Stack became a feature of the landscape, with 32 days of misery as lorries queued for miles due mainly to industrial action and migrant activity.

On June 9, parts of Week Street in Maidstone became an inferno.

The fire broke out in The Works bookshop in Week Street at around 2am and 90 firefighters tackled it at its height.

Just this month the trial of suspected arsonist Adam Stajer collapsed, after prosecution decided they could no longer proceed on the evidence.
