Death of former Kent batsman

FORMER Kent batsman Tony Woollett has died at the age of 76 (Mark Pennell writes).

Woollett, born in Lambeth and educated at Maidstone Technical School, was a left-hander who had had trails for the county in 1947 and went on to play 44 first team matches between 1950 and 1954.

He enjoyed his best season in 1953, scoring 698 runs at an average of 24.06 but retired from county cricket at the end of the following summer.

In later life he appeared for Berkshire and became an active member of the Hoppers’ Tie Club.
