Debutant strikes to give Gills the lead

Brentford 0 – 1 Gillingham

GILLINGHAM deservedly lead at the break after a debut goal from new loan signing Neil Harris.

Harris scored his 100th goal in league football with a deflected shot on the stroke of half-time after the ball had broken nicely for him.

It was no more than Neale Cooper’s side deserved after dominating the home side.

The visitors had a strong shout for a penalty turned down five minutes before the break after Harris’s shot appeared to be handled on the goalline, but the referee only gave a throw in.

And Darren Byfield had two excellent chances, the first after 34 minutes when he was let in by poor defending and the second just before Harris’s goal, but both times he shot wide.

Gillingham: Brown, Rose, Hope, Cox, Jackman, Crofts, Sancho, Pouton, Jarvis, Byfield, Harris. Subs: Knowles, Hessenthaler, Flynn, Hislop, Shields.
