HAMMER BLOW: Gills lacked the cutting edge to get back into the West Ham game

IF EVER proof has been needed that supporting Gillingham has been hard work in the last two years or so, this week’s two games are it.

After the heartbreaking late equaliser at Wolves on Saturday, we then lost our three-month unbeaten home record and drew yet another blank despite having 15 shots against West Ham on Tuesday.

And those two results, coupled with wins for Coventry and Plymouth, have left us looking in need of a minor miracle if we want to maintain our Championship status.

It’s funny how things work out – when I was walking to Molineux before kick-off, any Wolves fan offering me a 2-2 draw would have had his hand snapped off.

But the way in which we threw away two points in stoppage time left me feeling dejected.

We had deserved both of our leads, but we threw them away far too quickly. Kenny Miller shouldn’t have been left unmarked to score the first, and the collective work of Nyron Nosworthy and Ian Cox for the second is the stuff of nightmares.

It was a real pity as Mike Flynn’s superbly taken goal had looked like it just might turn out to be the best moment of the season so far.

And as for Tuesday night – well, it was just downright frustrating. After falling behind to Marlon Harewood’s goal, we had enough shots to have ourselves back into the game, but we lacked the cutting edge to take the advantage.

It doesn’t help when you’ve only got two out and out forwards – and it’s even more of a problem when one of them is starting to live up to his pre-Gills reputation of being lazy.

Darren Byfield made a bright start to his Gills career but at the moment he doesn’t look at all interested.

It is a real pity as his strike partner Darius Henderson is running his socks off for the cause week in week out and that is why we must get another forward in straight away.

We’ve simply got to score more goals – and if it costs the club some money to bring the right man in, so be it. It could be a small price to pay for staying up.
