Housewife Caroline Brett never misses an episode of 60 Minute Makeover, but she never thought she would be on it.

Mum-of-four Caroline, 51, had come back from a weekend away with her husband to find presenter Catherine Gee and her decorating crew had transformed her home in Berengrave Lane, Rainham.

She said: "I was gobsmacked, there was a crowd of people with a banner up. I was totally surprised.

"We’ve wanted to do up the house because we didn’t like our colour scheme, the fire, the furniture needed updating, most of it really."

Caroline gave up a nursing career to look after her 13-year-old son Adam who has cerebral palsy.

It was her dedication to him as well as bringing up her other children that prompted Caroline’s sister and eldest daughter to apply for the show.

She said: "Adam’s quadriplegic, so it affects all his limbs. He can’t communicate, but he’s a very sociable little boy. He can’t feed himself and is dependant on me.

"A lot of my time is taken up with Adam and they felt I deserved a treat, something special."

In just one hour the crew spruced up most of Caroline’s house and designed an extra special room for Adam.

Caroline added: "It is an absolutely amazing sensory room, the equipment, pictures of cars and F1 because he loves the Grand Prix.

"His chair vibrates with sounds that are linked up to the TV – they went to town with it.

"It is a wow room We couldn’t have done it for him, we couldn’t have afforded it."

As well as Adam’s sensory room, nine-year-old Tyler’s room has been turned into a football fan’s dream and the living and dining rooms have been given a teal touch with furnishings. Family members, who were in on the secret, pitched in, painting the walls and putting up the wallpaper.

Carolien said: "Everyday I look at it and it is just lovely. I’m suddenly house proud."

Caroline believes her home’s new look could have cost the show around £20k. Some of the decor was provided by local businesses John’s Carpets in Parkwood and Ascot Flowers in Rainham.

Caroline appears on 60 Minute Makeover on ITV1 tomorrow at 2pm.
