Four students have completed a month of radio training thanks to a charity.

The Dannyboy Trust (DBT), which was set up in memory of Warden Bay soldier Daniel Holkham who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010, sponsored the courses at Sheppey FM.

Those who took them, Sam Furwood, Ashley Davis, Jack Dowding and David Hodgeson, are all studying media at Canterbury College Swale Campus in Sheerness.

The students learned interview techniques, how to use the equipment and hosted their own live shows and were presented with T-shirts and a certificate.

Islander Sam, 17, has now been given a permanent slot with a youth show every Saturday between 9am and midday and the DBT is set to sponsor another round of courses this year.

Julie Nicholls, project manager at Sheppey Community Media Centre (SCMC) in Sheerness, where the station is based, said: “I’m really pleased with how it went. It’s been excellent.

“It’s really a catalyst for youngsters to be able to have a voice.

“I would like to thank DBT, they have been brilliant, and say well done to the students.”

It was SCMC’s first anniversary on Thursday.
