Jack Parkinson headed in a second-half winner as Welling gained revenge over rivals Bromley in Blue Square South on New Year's Day.

Having lost the home match 2-0 on Boxing Day, Welling again dominated but this time they gained maximum points for their efforts as both teams finished with two wins from three games over the festive period.

Only Bromley keeper Gareth I Williams saved his team from a much bigger margin of defeat as he produced a string of magnificent second-half saves.

Welling were on top for much of the opening period before Bromley's Warren McBean wasted the best chance of the half on 26 minutes, heading wide from Luke L'Anson's right-wing cross.

The second half belonged to the visitors, who should have led three minutes after the break but Lee Clarke's looping header from Andy Pugh's cross went agonisingly wide of the upright.

An error by centre-back Tutu Henriques then let in Pugh but Jerome Sobers produced a goal-saving tackle.

Williams came to the fore just past the hour mark. The game's magnificent performer, Welling player-boss Jamie Day, produced a stunning pass to pick out Pugh and his right-foot shot was turned away by the Bromley custodian.

Day was at the heart of everything Welling did with his best performance for the club since he returned to Dartford. Also worthy of note was Sam Cutler's display at right-back after Graeme Andrews (back) was ruled out.

Welling's pressure finally paid off on 66 minutes when Jack Obersteller's corner was headed in at the near post by Parkinson, pictured.

Pugh should have doubled the lead on 70 minutes but after a neat exchange with strike partner Tom Whitnell, he somehow fired wide at the near post when it seemed easier to score.

Pugh was then denied by a Mark Corneille block while Whitnell's right-foot shot was parried away by Williams.

It took Bromley until the 87th minute to threaten the Welling goal but substitute Adrian Stone headed over and keeper Charlie Mitten kept out Harrison Dunk's effort deep into stoppage time.

Bromley entertain Thurrock on Tuesday night, kick-off 7.45pm.
