Valley View: Charlton Athletic's Jason Euell writes for the KM Group

Someone told me last Saturday that it was almost exactly a decade since I first made my debut for Charlton.

I can’t say it was something that I wanted to hear. It made me feel old – but there’s still plenty of life in me and it’s great to be back playing at The Valley, even if we couldn’t manage a victory against Scunthorpe United.

We were disappointed in the end to draw but given the extent of the changes over the summer, I don’t think anyone would have been unhappy before the season started to have 10 points out of a possible first 12.

It felt great to pull on the Charlton shirt again up at Notts County earlier this month and it was even better coming on at 2-1 up because it gave me a bit more belief to fight for something to hold on to.

In July, I called manager Chris Powell to ask if I could come down to train and keep fit while I was waiting for a phone call to join another club.

He later asked me if I want to play in the friendly at Woking and there was an air of caution on my part as I didn’t want to scupper my chances of a deal somewhere.

But an injury can always happen in training, so a few weeks later, we discussed a contract and it was a no-brainer for me to sign.

Charlton are now considered League 1 promotion favourites, which is great for the club but with all the new players coming in, it’s going to be a massive task.

But from what I’ve seen over the past few weeks, they’re all capable and hungry enough to show they can deal with it.

At Notts County, most of the Charlton fans would have seen what happened at the final whistle when their midfielder Neal Bishop booted the ball toward them in frustration at his team’s defeat. I found it disrespectful, so Danny Hollands and I went to make him aware of it!

It’s ironic, because I was due to be part of a four-man panel for BBC Radio 5 Live’s Fighting Talk

show had I not been part of the matchday squad that day.

I had had the questions emailed to me and at 1pm on Friday, I was still supposed to go on the programme, before I was called into the travelling squad.

It’s time for the club to rebuild itself, get up to the higher levels of the league and continue the Charlton ethos which Chris has brought back after all these years.
