An 18-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of causing the death by dangerous driving of his 18-year-old girlfriend in a car crash.

Officers investigating the collision in Shalloak Road in Canterbury have questioned Mentesh Da Silva, from Teynham, who was seriously injured in the collision.

His girlfriend, Emily Laker, from Sturry, died when a black Renault Clio hit a tree on Sunday, August 30, at about 12.20am.

A third teenager from Faversham, who was in the back of the car, escaped with minor injuries.

Emily lived in Sturry with her mother Julie Swinerd.

She had two sisters, Louise, 23, and Sophie, 16, and had spent her early childhood growing up in Chilham, where she attended St Mary’s Primary School.

She later went to the Steiner School and then the Chaucer School in Canterbury.

Investigating officer DC Mark Robinson said: "This forms part of our investigation into establishing what happened and I would urge anyone who saw the Renault Clio that night and who has yet to call us to please do so."

Da Silva has been bailed until October 3 pending further enquiries.
