An alcoholic tried to commit "suicide by cop" by holding four girls captive with an imitation gun in Dartford town centre, a court has heard.

Alfred Newman wanted to be shot by armed police after his partner and children left him.

The 57-year-old held the terrified teenagers against their will for 25 minutes before a member of the public disarmed him.

Newman, of Cavell Crescent, Dartford, was jailed for two-and-a-half years.
