Taxpayers pick up council group's hotel bill

THIS is the list of those who attended the infamous Chilston Park council conference – but the Messenger is being gagged from revealing exactly who stayed at the luxury hotel at taxpayers’ expense.

We exclusively reported last week how a group of civil servants, set up to improve the lives of children, held a two-day training session at the four-star venue.

And 11 delegates of Gravesham Local Children’s Services Board decided to stay overnight at the swanky country house hotel, 26 miles away in Lenham near Maidstone – bringing the total cost to the public purse to £2,150.

Now Kent County Council, which funds the group, has released a list of the 16 delegates plus trainer who attended on January 29 and 30.

But it is still refusing to clarify who spent the night at Chilston Park, and did not return repeated calls to offer an explanation.

KCC earlier claimed Chilston Park was the cheapest and nearest option, despite Gravesend’s Best Western Manor Hotel having cheaper conference facilities and there being a handful of travel options.

Critics slammed the splurge as “an outrageous waste of taxpayers’ money”, while education bosses slapped a ban on similar hotel “jaunts”.

KCC said 16 members plus trainer attended the conference.

designed to “improve understanding of each other’s roles and responsibilities, and to develop a vision for how the board would champion services for children and young people in the borough”.
