A man was found dead in a burning car on a business park near Whitstable in the early hours of this morning.

Police and firefighters were called to scene shortly after 2.15am after a security guard reported a VW Polo ablaze near the entrance to the Estuary View Business Park.

A security guard who witnessed the incident said the car "suddenly burst into flames".

The scene was taped off the scene and the Whitstable slip road off the Thanet Way closed. It has since reopened.

The KM Group has an office on the estate. Security guard John Bethune, who saw the incident, said he had just finished a walk around the building shortly before 2am when he became aware of a car being driven around the estate.

He said: "We get quite a few joyriders and courting couples up here at night so it was nothing unusual - but I don't go outside and leave the building unattended.

"I could see car lights going off and on and hear the engine revving for about 10 minutes and then it suddenly burst into flames. I dialled 999 and later the firemen told me there was a body in the car."

The man's body was removed from the scene on Thursday morning.

Police say the car was seen travelling coast-bound on the Thanet Way at Brenley before the incident.
