Full-throttle fun

Eleven-year-olds braced to compete for the Red Bull Elite Youth Cup at Canada Heights

They say it’s best to start 'em young and the Red Bull Pro Nationals are the perfect way to get the whole family interested in motocross. It is also a fantastic family day out.

Engines will be roaring as riders kick start a weekend of full-throttle racing at the Red Bull Pro Nationals Motocross.

Yet this date in Kent’s motorbiking calendar is not just for leather-clad petrol-heads. The Canada Heights circuit in Swanley is hoping to pull in families with a series of children’s attractions and characters from TV shows.

Inside the Kidz Zone few little’uns will be able to resist a hug from Fireman Sam or Bob the Builder. And in tune with the event Roary the Racing Car and his pal Big Chris will be there to pose for pictures – that is if children can take their awe-filled eyes off Humungousaur from Ben 10.

Yet the children’s TV A-listers are only part of weekend that will see racing in three championships and a live freestyle show.

The event on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31 is the fourth round of seven in the UK-wide Red Bull Pro Nationals series. Racing fans will be able to watch the best motocross riders in Europe battle it out for podium finishes in the main event but there will also be the Red Bull Elite Youth Cup with children from the age of seven upwards racing. Amateur riders will take on each other in the Fuchs Silkolene 2 Stroke British Championship.

When fans are feeling burnout there is plenty more to do away from the track. Back in the Kidz Zone bungee trampolines, zorb balls and a bouncy castle will help families let off steam.

Children feeling inspired by events on the track can put their riding skills to the test at the Suzuki Motocross Experience, where children as young as seven can have a go at riding a mini motocross bike in full safety gear with help from an instructor.

Then the real showstoppers hit the track in the FMX Live Tour. There are three Freestyle Motocross shows where riders will perform back flips and other mid-air stunts as they jump huge distances across the track.

Trade stands, food stalls and bars will satisfy anyone in need of some light browsing time and riders will give autographs in a signing area.

A huge Red Bull marquee party will have DJs on Saturday night for those who opt to camp for the weekend. It will have a music festival vibe except the rock stars will be racers.

Fireman Sam might even head out on the dancefloor. That would be a sight!

The Red Bull Pro Nationals take place on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31. Racing is from 10am to 5pm. Gates open 9am.
