THE historic harbour at Ramsgate and its acclaimed marina is enjoying international exposure at one of the UK’s premier sailing events – the London Boat Show at the ExCel centre, Docklands, until January 14.

Sailing enthusiasts can find out exactly what makes the seaside resort so special by visiting stand N441 where the Ramsgate team are on hand each day to answers questions, supply leaflets – and even sell you a berth.

Thanet council leader Cllr Sandy Ezekiel said: "Ramsgate is a great place to moor your boat and to visit, boasting the only royal harbour in the country, international watersport events, a unique coastal location, excellent links to the continent, popular high street shops and individual boutiques, and an array of bars, cafes and restaurants for boat owners to enjoy.

"What sets Ramsgate apart from other harbours is its prime location in the heart of the town. Sailors can moor in our marina and be sitting in one of our fantastic restaurants or quayside cafes within minutes."

The 700-berth marina – winner of the prestigious Four Anchor award and one of the best in the south east – is a distinctive landmark, servicing local and international yachtsmen, a local fishing industry and a range of marine-related businesses operating in picturesque arches under Royal Parade.

Marina facilities include readily available water, electricity and refuelling; a modern amenity block with free showers, toilets and launderette; 24 hour access to the outer marina; 24 hour security manning and CCTV surveillance; a chandlery, boat repairs, slipways, boat park and brokerage, and a 40 tonne boat hoist and wash-off service.

*The harbour received its royal status in 1821 as a thank you from a grateful King George IV who was impressed with the hospitality he received on his way to Hanover.

*The port has played important roles in recent history. It was one of the main embarkation harbours during the Napoleonic wars and in 1940 thousands of soldiers disembarked there after escaping the beaches of Dunkirk.

*Among harbour events confirmed for 2007 are the visit of the classic tall ship the Grand Turk on April 13 and the Ramsgate powerboat grand prix on July 7 and 8.
