KENT'S Shane Byrne wants a double win on Bank Holiday Monday to clinch his first-ever British Superbike Championships title in style.

Byrne, the champion-elect from Minster on Sheppey, is 128 points ahead of nearest rival John Reynolds (Suzuki) and needs one more race win or two podium finishes to wrap it up.

Byrne said: "I really want to win both races and Cadwell Park is my favourite track. I hate finishing second to anyone. I can't stand going up to the podium unless I win.

"But it's hard at the moment because rule changes and the development of the Suzuki bikes means that where they were finishing five to 10 seconds behind me at the start of the season, now they finish ahead.

"It's frustrating because I'm riding every bit as hard now as I did back then. Suzuki's machines have always been the fastest bikes on the grid, but now they are even stronger.

"I'm not taking anything away from their team because they are doing great. It just means I have to dig deep and I'm confident I can do so."

Byrne had to endure his most disappointing weekend of the season in the last round at Oulton Park in Cheshire on August 10.

It was the first time the 26-year-old did not feature on the podium as he slid out of the first race after flash storms and had to settle for a disappointing fourth in the second.

He said: "I was unlucky in race one when Kagayama ran me wide and I hit a stream of water. Then in race two I got a poor start and by the time I'd got into a rhythm, fourth was the best I could manage. I've never ridden so hard for such a bad result.

"But everyone has one of those days and if my worst weekend is a crash and a fourth I can't complain as there's a lot of boys out there who have not achieved that yet."

Championship standings: 1 Shane Byrne (Ducati) 365pts, 2 John Reynolds (Suzuki) 237, 3 Michael Rutter (Ducati) 226, 4 Yukio Kagayama (Suzuki) 214,

5 Steve Plater (Honda) 202, 6 Glen Richards (Kawasaki) 189, 7 Gary Mason (Yamaha) 148, 8 Sean Emmett (Ducati) 148, 9 Steve Hislop (Yamaha) 122, 10 Scott Smart (Kawasaki) 116.

Remaining rounds: August 25 (R10) Caldwell Park, September 14 (R11) Brands Hatch, September 28 (R12) Donington Park.
