Trio competing for point-to-point crown

THREE point-to-point jockeys are vying closely for the Men's South East Championship, with Pete Bull and Phillip Hall and Chris Gordon in contention at the top of the leader board.

With every point having the potential to make all the difference, all three will be out at the first Penshurst meeting on Saturday. The fixture is staged by the Old Surrey Burstow and West Kent Hunt with the first race at 2pm.

Bull also joint owns the current leading horse, Larkus Aurelius with trainer, Liz Howes from Tenterden. Reports from the course suggest that watering might be necessary and if so, there should be plenty of runners for the six scheduled races.

The meeting opens with the Members' Race where Half Moon Spinney should account for his opponents and give his rider, the secretary for the meeting, Caroline Holliday, a great start to the afternoon. The in-form Jack Hackett, who has run some cracking races this season, mainly due to the fitting of blinkers, should take the Confined Race.

Phil York, who many will have seen on TV riding Perky Lad at the Aintree meeting, must go close in the Men's Open on the same horse. The Ladies Open looks a much more competitive affair, but Mr Miller will probably start favourite, although the danger will be Storm Castle with the greater experience.

He will be out to continue his winning sequence. Celtic Duke from the East Anglian Turner stable could also run close.

Racegoers are again advised to get there early to avoid lengthy queues and to get a good viewing position. Entrance is £15 per car and all occupants, and pedestrians £5. The course is situated three miles west of Penshurst, west of the B2188.
