Saints take title defence to the wire

St Lawrence and Highland Court sustained their Premier Division title defence until this weekend’s final round of fixtures after beating relegated Sandwich Town by 67 runs on Saturday.

The victory, Saints’ first of the season when batting first, moved them to within 10 points of leaders Hartley Country Club and only seven short of second-placed Bromley.

Having been invited to bat first, St Lawrence posted a useful 55-over total of 253-8 with contributions pretty much throughout the order from Ciaran Morgan (61), David Smith (40) and Charlie Hemphrey (45) while Craig Spanton (3-65) and Leon Johnson (3-53) were the pick of the Town attack.

In reply, Sandwich were dismissed for 186 inside 44.2 overs with a modest top score of 35 from Stuart Smith.

Former Kent seamer Ben Trott led the Saints attack with 3-45, spinner Hemphrey bagged 3-47 while Alex Day and Ben Easter also took two apiece in a comfortable win that assures Town’s relegation to Division 1.
