FORMER Bromley squash player Adrian Grant just fell short of a medal chance in the Commonwealth Games.

He and his mixed doubles partner Alison Waters lost in the quarter-finals to Australians Rachael Grinham and David Palmer.

Grant, 25, learned to play at Bromley Town Squash Club, now a Cannons club, and the New Eltham club, with guidance from his father, Trevor, a Kent player and coach, who still lives in Bromley.

He said: "My dad got me playing when I was 10. After getting to a certain level in juniors and winning all the national titles, I had to move on to turn pro and focus fully on my sport."

Now based in Leeds, he said: "The Games are a massive experience, mixing with other athletes and meeting new people from around the world."

In their three preliminary group games in Melbourne, Grant and Waters lost to a New Zealand pair in five hard-fought sets, but qualified for the last 16 with straight-sets victories over pairs from Mauritius and Zambia.

They next beat Runa Reta and Matthew Guiffre of Canada in straight sets, but lost 9-1, 9-6, 11-9 to the Australians, who were both silver medalists in the singles.
