All three lanes have been shut at the end of the bridge for repairs by National Highways.

The works started at 9pm on Friday (May 17) and will finish at around 6am on Monday.

At one point on Saturday there were reports of approximately four miles of congestion, causing more than 60-minute delays.

A diversion route has been put in place, with drivers instructed to come off the motorway via the slip road for Junction 2, onto to the roundabout and rejoin.

The problems have continued today (Sunday) with one driver saying they had been stuck for two hours.

There are also hold-ups in Strood town centre due to a lane closure under the railway bridge at the junction with Station Road.

The Medway Bus Passenger group has reported delays of 70 to 80 minutes from Chatham to Strood.
