The Clean Air for Schools initiative will explore the impact of traffic on school air and what pupils can do to improve their local environment. Participating schools will be given air-monitoring equipment to set up on their grounds and collect air-quality data over a 10-month period.

To publicise the scheme, the MidKent Environmental Health Team is hosting focus-group events at Tunbridge Wells Town Hall on Monday, May 14, and at Maidstone Town Hall the following Monday.

The scheme runs from September to June 2019, and is organised by MidKent Environmental Health in partnership with the KM Charity Team.

As well as raising awareness of air pollution and the importance of reducing car journeys to school, the initiative complements primary school science and health education aspects of the national curriculum.

Alternatively, it could be completed as an extra-curricular activity with an environment club, green team, or eco committee.

To register for either of the focus-group events or to find out more about the scheme, email EHAdmin@MidKent.gov.uk, naming the school representative you would like to attend either meeting. Both events will run from 2 to 3pm.

The KM Charity Team organises green travel programmes for schools including Super Wow (Walk on Wednesday), designed to cut road journeys, encourage pupils to lead more healthy and active lifestyles, reduce air pollution, and boost road safety near schools.

Schools can sign up to Super Wow this term at a 20% discount and have green travel in place for September. Contact Sarah Clyne at sclyne@thekmgroup.co.uk or call 0844 264 0291 or visit www.kmwalktoschool.co.uk/wow
