The property is just a stone’s throw from the cottage, which belonged to the artist, filmmaker, gay rights activist and gardener from 1986 until his death in 1994.

In the 1980s, Jarman received a positive HIV test and wished to leave London and live by the sea in his final years.

He visited the Kent coast with actress Tilda Swinton and fell in love with the cottage, which he purchased for £32k. He lived there for the next eight years with his long-term companion Keith Collins, to whom Jarman left the cottage when he died.

The house, where Jarman worked on his 1990 film The Garden starring Swinton, is now looked after by the charity Creative Folkestone and is open to the public for visits.

The detached bungalow, which is on the same strip of beach - known as the ‘desert’ because of its desolate landscape - as Prospect Cottage, has a similar shingle garden and wooden exterior.

However, it boasts plenty of its own highlights, including three bedrooms, two of which have stunning sea views, two spacious bathrooms and a country-style kitchen.

There’s also an artist studio that could be used as a workshop, home office or creative space.

The fisherman’s cottage is surrounded by one of Kent’s most striking landscapes, with a flat coastline that benefits from views of the nearby lighthouses and nuclear power station and is home to more than 600 species of plants and insects.

The house opens onto the beach and nature reserve, with the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch light railway line running past the property.
