Ashford Town may be no more but the club will re-form under the new name of Ashford United next season.

Club officials have been forced to change the name after Town went out of business last summer amid a boardroom power struggle and off-field financial problems.

In order to get affiliated with the Kent County Football Association, the club required a new name and committee members voted to return to the club’s roots by taking the name Ashford United.

The club were originally named Ashford United in 1891 and now 120 years later, owner Tony Betteridge (pictured) is delighted with the return.

He said: "We’re United by name and hopefully by nature. We want everyone to get behind this football club and what better way to do it than being united.

"We didn’t want to change our name at all but to be able to play again we had to.

"There were several names that wouldn’t have been accepted by the KCFA but this one has been and we’re thrilled."

He added: "We are now affiliated with the KCFA and are ready to make the next steps ahead of the new season." Mr Betteridge revealed the club will need a new logo to accompany the new badge but it will retain its traditional colours.

He said: "We want to make the logo reflect the history that name has. And we’ll be playing in green and white – don’t worry about that."
