Delay to car park re-opening

A town centre car park is going to be closed longer than feared.

The Edinburgh Road multi-storey car park in Ashford was closed to motorists on October 20 for essential maintenance, with drivers warned it would be out of action for up to six weeks.

The entrance had to be closed for ramp repairs, which were scheduled to be finished this week.

Ashford Borough Council said the car park would then reopen apart from the upper deck where work was planned to be completed by the end of November.

Now that is in the balance with the council unable to give a date when it will reopen.

Council spokesman Dean Spurrell said: “The removal of the existing surface coating on the access ramp has revealed additional areas of concrete requiring repair.

“These works must be undertaken before the application of the new surfacing and subsequently require the ramp to remain closed for a longer than originally envisaged.

“It is not possible to give a definite date for the reopening of the car park, however every effort is being made to do so as soon as possible in order to minimise disruption to town centre visitors.”
