THE father of a young man who was found dead in woodland in Kent two months ago has urged the public to help trace his son's killer.

Lengthy specialist tests carried out by forensic scientists and DNA results have confirmed Ashley Dighton's identity.

The 19-year-old was last seen on Monday, June 11, on his way to Sainsbury's in Simone Weil Avenue, Kennington, Ashford.

His decomposed body was found in the wooded area behind the supermarket on Wednesday, July 11, prompting a detailed search of the area that lasted three weeks and involved around 100 police officers.

His father Ambrose Dighton said: "We hope that anybody out there who can help in the police investigation will come forward. The family would be very grateful.

"This has been a terrible tragedy for us and we need answers."

Police have also confirmed that they are treating the death as murder and renewed their appeal for information to help them with their inquiry.

Acting Det Ch Ins Dave Withers, who is leading the investigation, said: "Although Ashley’s family suspected the worst, having to wait for the outcome of the scientific tests has been a distressing time for them.

"Now we know for sure that it was Ashley, I would again appeal to anyone who has information about this case to come forward. All information will be treated sensitively and can be confidential."

Ashley was 5ft 7in tall and of slim build. He had green eyes and dark brown hair and had two tattoos, the word 'SKA' on his right arm and a Tweetie Pie character on his left shoulder.

Police would like to speak to anyone who thinks they saw Ashley on June 11, especially at Sainsbury's or the walkway through the wooded area to the back of the supermarket which is known locally as "the dip".

Anyone with further information is asked to telephone the incident room on 01622 654860. Alternatively, contact Kent Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
