Lightning struck a house while a basement was flooded during storms last night.

A bolt toppled a chimney at a house in Badgers Den, Highland Park, Singleton.

Meanwhile a basement flat was flooded under 3ft of water in Tontine Street, Folkestone.

The lightning hit the chimney at about 10.45pm and the occupants, a man and a woman, escaped unhurt.

A spokesman for Ashford Fire Station said: “Thankfully there was not much damage for a lightning strike but the chimney came tumbling down.

“We checked the roofspace to make sure there was no fire inside.”

Fire engines from Ashford and the retained Wye station were called out.

Meanwhile, at about 10.50pm, the flat in Tontine Street was flooded during torrential rain.

Folkestone firefighters say the occupants, a man and woman, had been above on the ground floor and were unharmed.

Firefighters pumped out the water.
