A police dog sniffed out a suspect hiding in river reeds after they fled the scene of a crash.

After an hour searching East Stour River in Ashford, PD Cody discovered the suspect, a 27-year-old from Dover, who was then arrested on suspicion of failing to stop following a collision, and driving while over the limit.

On Saturday morning, officers were called to Malcolm Sargent Road, following reports of a collision.

At 7.11am, when police arrived at the scene they discovered that the driver, who they suspected was over the drink drive limit, was nowhere to be found, with PD Cody then deployed.

The German shepherd led her handler through deep hedgerow and across the East Stour river, finding him after an hour in the long reeds.

The suspect has been released on bail while enquiries continue.
