Ashford rubbish tip remains closed day after fire

A rubbish dump is closed today, the day after a fire was reported on-site.

The Ashford Household Waste Recycling Centre was shut to the public following the incident, which began at 2.30pm yesterday, the cause of which remains unknown.

Crews fought the blaze using water jets - extinguishing the flames at 3.22pm - and remained at the centre throughout the afternoon to dampen any hotspots.

The fire came on the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures hitting 30C yesterday.

The nearest alternative recycling centre is on Ross Way in Shorncliffe, Folkestone.
