Ashford traffic problems after police car and Audi crash at Matalan roundabout where A28 and B2229 Brookfield Road meet

Four people are being quizzed today after a police officer suffered head injuries in a chase which ended in a crash on a busy roundabout.

The officer was hurt when the patrol car he was driving smashed into a lamppost while pursuing a white Audi in Ashford yesterday.

The Audi hit a tree at the roundabout near clothing store Matalan, where the busy A28 meets the B2229 Brookfield Road.

One man was helped into an ambulance while another person was treated by paramedics.

The officer was taken to the William Harvey Hospital but later released.

The pursuit started just a few roads away in Kimberley Way, Ashford, when the Audi allegedly failed to stop.

It is said to have sped off and collided with another car in Brookfield Road before crashing into a tree.

The air ambulance landed opposite Matalan and nine police cars were at the scene.

The road was closed for more than five hours while officers from the police's collision unit investigated the scene.

Four people - three men and a woman - were arrested and remain in custody today.

Detectives are now appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened at 3.50pm.
