TRANSPORT Police are keeping an eagle eye out to stop potential football hooligans boarding Eurostar at Ashford as well as at Kent’s ferry ports.

Anyone with a banning order has been sent a letter ordering them to surrender their passports and, according to police, 90 per cent have complied.

At Ashford, the police operation is a blend of officers working covertly in plain clothes and others in uniform.

Insp Terry Reene, heading the operation at Ashford, said: "We obviously have a list of all people subject to banning orders, and we have the power to detain anybody who may cause trouble in Germany.

"We'll be doing this job until England either win the World Cup or get knocked out. So far no one has been detained but it’s early days yet."
