Ashford Borough Council release warning over bogus callers

A council is warning residents to beware of scam callers.

The message has been released by Ashford Borough Council (ABC) after several households received calls from people claiming to work for the authority’s legal and accident investigation team.

The callers say they are trying to uncover details about an accident the resident was in.

However, one victim, Steve Salter, who received the call said he became suspicious after noticing the number they were dialing from was an international number.

This prompted him to immediately hang up.

Mr Salter said: "He said he worked for the council.

"I've got caller ID on my phone and it was coming up with an international number. Unless ABC have moved their offices to Mumbai?

"I realised it was a scam and put the phone down."

Mr Salter said the caller had a strong Indian accent.

Now, ABC are warning others to do the same.

A spokesman said: “Please be aware that there are currently bogus callers in operation, claiming to be from Ashford Borough Council’s legal and accident investigation team.

“They are saying that they are contacting you following an accident.

“If you receive one of these calls hang up immediately. Do NOT give them any information as they are not genuine.”

This is not the first time ABC have had to warn residents about scam callers.

In May 2015, a man claiming to work for the council made over 100 calls... to the council.

Again, the man told employees he wanted to talk about their "recent accident".
