Boyband 5ive to headline Canterbury Pride

Kent's biggest LGBT event is set to be headlined by a popular '90s boy band as it returns for the first time in two years.

Canterbury Pride organisers have revealed that 5ive will take to the stage in the Dane John Gardens following a parade through the city on Saturday, September 11.

The group will be joined by Cheryl Hole and Baga Chipz from RuPaul's Drag Race UK.

Committee member Jon Fitter-Harding said: "It’s been over two years since we last gathered together in the city to celebrate Pride.

"While this year we are coming together in September, it is no less important to acknowledge the fight for equality across the community and the struggles faced during Covid."

5ive shot to fame with hits like When the Lights Go Out and Everybody Get Up after being formed in 1997.

They first split up in September 2001, having sold 10 million records worldwide.

The band now consists of three members - Ritchie Neville, Scott Robinson and Sean Conlon.

Mr Fitter-Harding says the event will also feature a "huge variety of local and international LGBTQ+ performers".

Since its creation, Canterbury Pride has become one of the city's biggest crowd-pleasers, drawing in crowds from across the county and beyond.

Its last event in 2019, drew about 20,000 people to the area.

But it had to be cancelled last year, following the outbreak of coronavirus.
