Canterbury returned to winning ways with a 10-0 win over Launceston in National 2 South on Saturday.

The city club bounced back from the loss at Taunton the previous week with an an energetic and confident performance.

Playing into the strong wind and heavy rain in the opening half, Canterbury produced one of their best opening halves of the campaign.

The hosts were dominant at the breakdown and gained good ground through driving mauls but it was from a lineout that they took the lead, Wim Baars touching down to become the side’s leading try scorer this season.

After the break, the visitors began brightly but saw lock Ben Hilton sin-binned and the hosts rallied with a fine move despite the conditions, four pairs of hands passing on possession before centre Juan Del Val went over in the corner 17 minutes from time.

The visitors set up camp in the city club 22 in the closing stages but were unable to create any real chances, opting for pick-and-drive power which was repelled by Canterbury, who saw Baars sin-binned late-on.

The result saw the city side stay eighth with just one game of the season to go, at home to Bournemouth on April 27.
