Mel Clewlow says her EuroCanterbury side don’t want to be remembered as a team who fall at the final hurdle following their play-off defeat last weekend.

Canterbury were hoping to qualify for Europe next season but missed out on the chance with a 1-0 England Hockey Women’s Premier Division play-off defeat against Reading last Sunday.

Great Britain international Alex Danson scored the only goal five minutes into the second half.

Clewlow (pictured) admitted she was disappointed to miss out on play-off victory for the second season in succession but is confident her side can build from the disappointment next term.

Canterbury finished the Premier Division campaign in second place, just two points behind Leicester, and she said: "We are all disappointed to lose but we gave it everything.

"I can’t fault the effort from the players and I was surprised by my own reaction at the end of the game.

"I think the defeat will give us more drive for next season.

"We have lost in the play-offs for the last two seasons but I do not want this team to be remembered as one which falls at the final hurdle.

"It’s been a successful season with our highest-ever finish and we were only two points away from wining the league.

"Next season will be interesting as we don’t know when our international players will be available."
