A martial arts enthusiast beat up his flatmate after a row about cleaning away rubbish in the kitchen.
Student Ziqiu He was angry that victim Tyler Fagg had not emptied the bins at the shared flat in Sergeants Parade in Canterbury.
The 20 year old then kicked Mr Fagg in his chest before punching him repeatedly and knocking out a tooth.
But He sent a letter to the judge saying he wanted to apologise to his former friend and to pay compensation.
Prosecutor Andrew Forsyth said the two students shared a communal kitchen in shared accommodation in May.
“At 8pm Mr Fagg was in his room playing on his Playstation. He heard a knock on his door and when he opened He was stood in the doorway looking angry and agitated.
“The pair then argued about emptying the bins in the kitchen and He then kicked Mr Fagg in the chest, grabbed him around the throat, and held him up against a wardrobe.”
Canterbury Crown Court heard that the victim, who works part-time at McDonalds fast food restaurant, then faced a “fight or flee” decision and struck He.
“He told him he shouldn’t have done that and grabbed him around the throat throwing him across a bed.
“He then punched him in the face several times while demanding an apology.
“Mr Fagg apologised but He continued to punch him until the noise of the fight alerted another student," he added.
He, now of Colette Close, Broadstairs, pleaded guilty to assault and was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £350 in compensation.
The court heard that the part-time pizza delivery man had posted a number of martial arts techniques on Facebook.
Julia MackWorth, defending, said: “He feels truly dreadful about what he did and wants to pay compensation. The kick was with done without shoes.
In a letter to Mr Fagg, read to the court, He said: “I hurt you very badly and I ruined our friendship...I never thought I would have an argument with you which would end up in a fight.
“I let my emotions get control of my body. I felt so guilty about the things I had done..I ask not for your forgiveness but for you to accept my apology.”
