Rush hour traffic in Canterbury city centre after 'loud bang'

Residents have reported a "loud bang" which shook houses in their street - before traffic chaos gridlocked Canterbury this morning.

Police say the noise, which rocked Broad Street at around 6.55am, was caused by a tyre blowing out on a large articulated lorry.

The vehicle was immobilised - and has led to huge queues in the city centre.

The stricken lorry is causing delays across the city and clogging roundabouts.

One motorist told KentOnline at 9am: "It's bumper to bumper on New Dover Road and we haven't moved for 15 minutes."

Frustrated drivers are stationery in long queues which stretched along the A28 and New Dover Road.

A witness at the scene in Broad Street said: "Police are either side of the road controlling traffic.

"They are holding up one way, then letting traffic through the other way.

"That's why traffic is buidling up along Military Road and Broad Street.

"It looks like they could be here a while to fix this tyre which has a big split.

"A truck tyre repair van is at the scene working on the vehicle."
