Armed police used two Taser guns and a rubber baton launcher before shooting a man suspected of stabbing a teenage girl, it has emerged today.
The weapons - used by officers to incapacitate a person - were seized by independent investigators along with a police-issue handgun after Marc Traylor was seriously wounded at his home in Hersden last Monday.
The 40-year-old, who is still fighting for his life in hospital, was shot at 1am after a 16-year-old girl was stabbed at the semi-detached house in The Avenue.
The teenager is stable and recovering.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission was called in to investigate the incident, which unfolded over the night of Sunday, February 8.
An independent ballistics expert examined the house, while IPCC investigators oversaw the recovery of evidence from the property and conducted house-to-house enquiries.
Firearms officers involved in the incident have been interviewed and are all being treated as “significant witnesses”.
Today the IPCC confirmed a police-issue handgun, two Tasers and a baton launcher had been used during the incident and have been recovered for “testing”.
Baton launchers are billed as a safer alternative to conventional firearms and fire a three-inch long PVC bullet at 160mph.
IPCC commissioner Mary Cunneen said: “My thoughts are with all those involved in this serious incident.
“Our investigators have met with the family to explain our role and we will keep them updated as our investigation progresses.
“Although incidents of this nature are rare, where someone is shot by the police, it is right that it is subject to rigorous independent scrutiny.
“We have made good progress recovering evidence that will help provide an understanding of what happened.”
