KENT cricket captain David Fulton has landed his second signing of the close season with the capture of left-arm swing bowler Alamgir Sheriyar.

The former Warwickshire, Leicestershire and Worcestershire paceman, 29 this week, has signed a two-year contract at St Lawrence.

Sheriyar, the country's leading wicket-taker in 1999 with 92 victims, was released from the final year of his contract at New Road in order to join Kent.

The Birmingham-born player said: "I am truly excited by the prospect of playing for Kent. I have been greatly impressed with the club's ambitions and plans and can't wait to get stuck into things next season.

"I feel a change is the right thing for me at this stage of my career and hope the move will provide me with the impetus to achieve much more in the game."

Sheriyar has taken five wickets in an innings no less than 21 times and 10 wickets in a game three times in a career spanning 127 first-class matches.

He has also bagged two career hat-tricks, the first on championship debut for Leicestershire, but then against Kent at New Road in 1999 when he sent Trevor Ward, Andrew Symonds and his new skipper David Fulton, back to the pavilion in the space of three balls.

Fulton, who admitted in September that the acquisition of a left-arm swing bowler topped his close season shopping list, said: "The cricket committee have thought long and hard about how best to strengthen our bowling and it's been some time since we had a quality left-arm fast bowler. Alamgir will add variety to our attack and provide a real threat to our opponents next season."

Sheriyar joins former England Under-19 all-rounder Peter Trego in the Kent bowling department for the 2003 campaign. Trego left Somerset to sign a two-year deal last month.
