Striker Andy Gray missed a second-half penalty as Charlton were knocked out of the Carling Cup first round at Hereford on Tuesday night.

The Addicks were taken to extra-time by the League 2 outfit and lost out to a goal from Jonny Godsmark in the 98th minute.

Philosophical Charlton boss Phil Parkinson, who made eight changes from his starting line-up on the opening day, said: "Chances win matches and we didn't take our chances. Credit Hereford, they played well on the night and I wish them all the best in the next round.

"We came here with a weakened squad but we came here looking to win, and are disappointed that we didn't. I thought we created enough chances to win the game."

Youngster Alex Stavrinou made his debut along with new recruit Wade Small, while Chris Solly and Scott Wagstaff started.

Hereford hit the woodwork twice in the first half before Charlton wasted a 63rd-minute opportunity to take the lead. Gray was felled by Richard Rose and picked himself up to take the spot-kick, only for keeper Adam Bartlett to save his spot-kick.

Godsmark put Hereford ahead early in extra-time before substitute Deon Burton (pictured) hit the post late on.

Parkinson added: "The plus point of the night was the youngsters getting first-team was the youngsters getting first-team football under their belts.

"Alex Stavrinou came in for his debut and I thought it was an absolutely terrific performance. He, Chris Solly and Scott Wagstaff all played, and it was good for those boys."
