Just Stop Oil protester from Germany who climbed Dartford Crossing should be deported says MP Gareth Johnson

An MP has said the German Just Stop Oil protester who brought part of Kent to a standstill should be deported when he is released from prison.

Marcus Decker was one of two protesters who scaled the the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge at the Dartford Crossing last year and caused traffic chaos for two days.

The protests saw gridlock along the M25 after police were forced to close the crossing for around 42 hours.

In April, Decker and Morgan Trowland, 40, were both sentenced at Southend Crown Court.

They were previously found guilty by a unanimous verdict of causing a public nuisance at Basildon Crown Court.

Decker now faces deportation following his prison sentence of two years and seven months.

Earlier this month his partner, Holly Cullen-Davis, set up a petition on Change.org to prevent the 34-year-old from being sent back to Germany by the Home Office.

On the page she says that they have been together for three years and share a “joint passion for music and for protecting our planet”.

Hundreds of people from various groups marched to the Home Office at the weekend in resistance to the decision to deport Decker.

But Dartford MP Gareth Johnson feels strongly that Decker should be sent back to Germany.

Mr Johnson said: “He should be deported; I see no reason why there should be an exception.

“His selfish actions caused misery for the whole of Dartford. He didn’t care about the consequences of his actions. It was deliberate, pre-planned and prolonged.

“This action prevented people getting to work, from picking up their children and from going about their daily lives.

“His prison sentence was not a day too long. This sentence sent a clear message that these actions were not ok.”

Not everyone shares Mr Johnson’s views. So far more than 85,000 people have signed the petition to stop Decker’s deportation.

The petition, which was launched on Sunday, June 4, originally aimed to reach 50,000.
