A late goal from bottom of the table Blackpool resigned Charlton to a fifth draw in seven games at The Valley on Saturday, writes Josh Fordham.
Charlton looked to be heading for all three points after goals from Yoni Buyens and Jordan Cousins cancelled out Chris Eagles’ opener before Steven Davies’ goal in the 89th minute levelled the sides.
Charlton were poor in the first half. They saw a lot of the ball but created little with it and misplaced far too many passes. Apart from the penalty they did not look at all likely to score.
The second half was much improved but their problem this season has been finishing teams off when they have the opportunity. Blackpool posed little attacking threat after the break but Charlton should won by a comfortable margin in the end.
The home side lined up with a few players having to play out of position to cope with noticeable absentees. Chris Solly was playing in a central midfield role because of an injury to Johnnie Jackson and after Arsenal recalled Francis Coquelin from his brief loan spell.
One positive was the performance of Joe Gomez. The 17-year-old, playing at right-back, looked comfortable in possession and posed a threat down the right wing.
Blackpool settled the quickest in the game and gave Charlton some early problems. They nearly scored in the 14th minute when Chris Eagles tried to find Davies but he couldn’t get a toe to his cross. Any touch would have left Nick Pope in the Charlton goal stranded.
Blackpool took the lead in the 25th minute after some dreadful defending from Charlton. Pope came for Jamie O’Hara’s corner but didn’t get there. Nyron Nosworthy had a free header at the back post and despite the efforts of Solly and Fox on the line the ball crept in with a final touch from Eagles.
Buyens’ penalty drew the Addicks level in the 38th minute. Johann Gudmundsson cut back a cross that first Harriott couldn’t get a foot on and then Igor Vetokele was brought down. Buyens stepped up and calmly placed it in the left-hand corner.
Charlton took the lead 10 minutes after the break when Jordan Cousins curled one into the bottom corner from 25 yards. He picked up the ball in the Blackpool half and the opposition defenders backed off not wanting to make a challenge. He obliged to take the opportunity to shoot and duly found the net.
After taking the lead the Addicks created far more and looked like a more confident team. Vetokele nearly matching Cousins’ strike in the 63rd minute but unlike his teammate could not find the bottom corner.
Charlton for most of the second half were restricted to long range efforts. Callum Harriott’s last involvement in the game in the 72nd minute was to curl a shot just wide of the post from 20 yards.
Blackpool almost stole a point after an O’Hara free-kick in the 81st minute. The ball was loose in the box but Kevin Foley’s shot ricocheted off his own man and went out for a goal kick.
Chris Solly should have sealed the victory in the 86th minute after Buyens cut the ball back to him on the edge of the box but he could not hit the target.
Cue the usual nail-biting finale that Addicks fans have come to expect at home this season.
Blackpool piled on the misery for Charlton when Davies scored a goal in the 89th minute to earn the away side a point. He headed home a free kick in a packed penalty box.
Andre Bikey should have put the Addicks back in front in the last minute of the game when George Tucadean cut back the ball from the byline but the big centre half skied the ball.
