Dartford capitulated against Chester at Princes Park on Tuesday night.
Lee Noble gave Tony Burman's side a half-time lead and Elliot Bradbrook scored to make it 2-0 immediately after the restart.
But the visitors then scored three goals in 10 minutes to turn the game on its head.
Craig Mahon's quickfire double brought Chester level and the excellent Matty Hughes made it 3-2, with Rhys Oates adding a late fourth to send the home fans streaming to the exits.
Peter Sweeney was back in the Dartford team after missing Saturday's trip to Lincoln because of illness, while Tom Bradbrook started up front in place of the absent Harry Crawford. Danny Harris was the man to make way for Sweeney.
Chester, who came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Bristol Rovers at the weekend, also made two changes. Michael Kay replaced Ben Heneghan at right-back and Sean McConville came in for Josh O'Keefe up front.
The visitors made a lively start and carved out a couple of half-chances but it was Dartford who opened the scoring on 15 minutes.
Ryan Hayes did brilliantly down the right-hand side, bamboozling Chester left-back Gareth Roberts and dinking over a cross which just begged to be converted. Noble obliged with a scissors-style volley from a narrow angle at the back post.
It should have been 2-0 moments later. Hayes provided another wicked delivery when Dartford won a free-kick midway inside the Chester half and Tom Bradbrook got on the end of it, glancing his header narrowly wide.
Tom Bradbrook had a real battle on his hands against Matthew Brown and Kieran Charnock but he gave Chester's big centre-halves as many problems as they caused him.
The visitors were guilty on occasions of over-playing at the back and Noble stole possession before setting up Elliot Bradbrook for a shot which flew straight at goalkeeper Jon Worsnop.
Dartford were pouring forward and Tom Bradbrook forced another save from Worsnop moments later when he burst down the left.
Chester continued to give their hosts the freedom of Princes Park. Hayes cut in from the right and no-one tracked him but instead of shooting with his trusty left foot, he turned back onto his right and swung over a deep cross which the Blues cleared.
Worsnop then had to punch an in-swinging Hayes free-kick behind for a corner.
But all the time it was only 1-0, Chester were right in the game.
The men in purple shirts started to see more of the ball as half-time approached and it needed a diving block from Mat Mitchel-King to cut out a dangerous low cross from the right.
Dartford doubled their lead 60 seconds into the second half.
Noble crossed right-footed from the left-hand side and Elliot Bradbrook directed a looping header over the stranded Worsnop and into the net.
But the Darts skipper went from hero to zero moments later.
He played a suicidal pass inside his own box and Mahon nipped in to shoot beyond Jason Brown.
Chester were buoyant and then they were level. A superb passing move saw the ball worked wide to John Rooney, whose low cross was touched in by Mahon at the near post.
Having been two goals down after 50 minutes, Chester took the lead on the hour mark. Oates played a slide-rule pass for Hughes, who got away from Rory McAuley and arrowed a low left-footed shot past Brown into the far corner.
Stunned by the 10 minutes of madness, Dartford took another 10 minutes to find their feet.
Mat Mitchel-King's long throw reached substitute Harris, who blazed over from close-range. Noble then teed up Sweeney but he sliced his shot well wide.
But defensively, the Darts looked vulnerable every time Chester attacked, with Hughes a particular menace down the right.
It was Oates who applied the coup de gras in the 86th minute, running onto substitute Craig Hobson's killer through-ball and cutting back onto his left foot before sliding the ball into the net.
Rooney should have made it 5-2in the dying moments as Dartford folded - but he shot over.
