Crystal Palace 1 Charlton 0

The bragging rights moved back across South London from The Valley to Selhurst Park as Charlton's recent dominance over arch-rivals Crystal Palace ended with Tuesday's dismal defeat.

Charlton, who had registered consecutive 1-0 wins on three previous visits, were seldom in contention and the massed ranks of the visiting supporters were given little to cheer as the side lost for the second time in four days.

Craig Beattie celebrated his home debut by settling the issue in the 63rd minute. Ben Watson produced a deep cross from the right and Beattie soared above Linvoy Primus to head home.

It was no more than Palace deserved against a strangely lack-lustre Charlton.

Manager Alan Pardew's decision to revert to a 4-5-1 formation back-fired as they created little to trouble the home defence in their worst derby performance of recent years.

Palace forced five corners in the opening five minutes as Charlton were hit by wave after wave of attacks.

At the final whistle Charlton were left confronting the unpalatable statistic of having taken four points from their last six games.

Charlton: Weaver; Cranie, Primus, Hudson, Youga; Sam (Todorov 69mins), Bailey, Holland (Gray 69mins), Ambrose (Zheng 69mins), Bouazza; Varney. Not used: Elliot, Semedo.

Attendance: 16,358.
