East Thurrock 1 Welling 1 match report

Welling are still waiting for their first league win of the season after losing their lead on Tuesday night.

The Wings were eight minutes away from holding on at East Thurrock but were pegged back by a late penalty - the fourth they have conceded in as many league games.

Welling had got off to a perfect start when Pierre Joseph-Dubois's brilliant header found the bottom corner inside the first 40 seconds.

Welling continued their quick start once ahead. On two minutes, Dan Walker's cross was nearly turned into his own net by home skipper Joe Ellul.

Then centre-back Dean Leacock headed over Danny Waldren's centre when he should have made the keeper work.

East Thurrock's best opening came from an error by Sean Francis on 18 minutes. He completely missed his kick and let in James Walker, but his shot was cleared off the line by left-back Jordon Brown.

Having had success by getting the ball forward early on, Welling failed to pick out their strikers towards the end of the first half - and the hosts had more chances as the half wore on with former Wings midfielder Reece Harris twice going close.

Welling also had their openings with youngster Archie Johnson setting up Walker but his low left-foot shot lacked enough power to trouble the keeper.

After the break, East Thurrock dominated possession without creating too many clear-cut chances.

Welling struggled to keep the ball and it meant that they had to soak up plenty of pressure.

An equaliser looked inevitable as the Wings regularly defended without leaving anyone up front and the goal arrived with eight minutes left.

Right-back Julian Banton's trip in the box saw a spot-kick awarded by referee Paul Kelly and Ben Marlow slotted past Lewington.

Welling came to life and substitute Bobby Devyne made space but then failed to connect properly with his 20-yard shot.

Welling: Lewington, Banton, Brown (Nelson 68mins), Hayles, Francis, Leacock, Joseph-Dubois (Hatton 53mins), Waldren, Crawford, Walker (Devyne 63mins), Johnson. Subs: Smith, Slabber. Attendance: 286.
